Reciprocating pumps include piston pumps, metering pumps, and diaphragm pumps, commonly known as reciprocating pumps. It is a type of positive displacement pump with a wide range of applications. A reciprocating pump is a conveying machinery that provides energy directly to a liquid in the form of pressure energy through the reciprocating motion of a piston. According to the driving method, reciprocating pumps are divided into two categories: motorized pumps (driven by electric motors) and direct acting pumps (driven by steam, gas, or liquid).
Characteristics of reciprocating pump:
1. Strong self-priming ability;
2. The theoretical flow rate is independent of working pressure and only depends on the speed, pump cylinder size, and number of applications;
3. The rated discharge pressure is independent of the size and speed of the pump;
4. Uneven flow;
5. The speed should not be too fast;
6. Not very sensitive to liquid contamination;
7. The structure is complex and there are many vulnerable parts.
Main components
Pump cylinder, piston, piston rod, suction valve, and discharge valve.
Working principle
When the piston moves from left to right, negative pressure is formed in the pump cylinder, and the liquid in the storage tank enters the pump cylinder through the suction valve. When the piston moves from right to left, the liquid in the cylinder is compressed, the pressure increases, and it is discharged through the discharge valve. The piston moves back and forth once, each sucking and discharging liquid once, which is called a working cycle; This type of pump is called a single action pump. If the piston travels back and forth once, each sucking and discharging liquid twice, it is called a double acting pump. The movement of a piston from one end to the other is called a stroke.
Advantages of reciprocating pumps
(1) It can achieve high discharge pressure, and the flow rate is independent of pressure, with good suction performance and high efficiency, among which the steam reciprocating pump can reach 80%~95%;
(2) In principle, it can transport any medium, almost without being limited by the physical or chemical properties of the medium;
(3) The performance of the pump does not vary with changes in pressure and viscosity of the conveying medium.
Disadvantages of reciprocating pumps
The traffic is not very stable. Under the same flow rate, it is larger than a centrifugal pump; Complex institutions; Large amount of funds used; Not easy to repair, etc.
